Duck Graphics - Signs and Airbrushing
Duck Graphics was started by Kerry Nicholson in and continues to be a leader in the sign and airburushing industries.
I started doing paintings on the kitchen table at home. I was in about grade four and I was really taken in as to how some artists could paint water to look like water or how can you paint a marble floor with marble columns reflected into it and that is where it all started. I was 9 years old and I was full of enthusiasm and I would paint and paint and paint and now I am 52 years old and I am still painting. I am a little bit better as an artist now but the enthusiasm to paint is still with me.
Over the years I have won art shows for my portraits of animals and people, I have painted many backdrops for such shows as Comic Relief, Jupiters Casino, Dream World, and the opening of the Brisbane Convention Center. I have painted 1 mural that was 130 metres long and 3metres high that took 6 weeks to paint and 2 murals 20metres long by 6metres high that took 6months. I have had my paintings opened by the then Opposition Leader Laurence Springbourg, and the Federation Park Commemoration Murals opened by the then Leader of the Nationals John Andersen. I have painted cross cut saws, milk cans, dog trailers, horse trailers, cars & boats. I have painted inside and outside house entertainment areas, & children's bedrooms. From T- Shirts to Mobile Homes. I have along with my brother Malcolm been awarded an Australia Day Cultural Award for our services towards the arts. I even won a first prize for a portrait of old Joe Bjelke Petersen at the Kingaroy Art Show ( How could I loose?).
Signwriting Services
With most signs the customer asks "How much will it cost?" followed by "How long will it last?". These are normally the first two questions. We'll get to prices later but as for how long it will last that depends on a lot of things. The three most important factors are what quality of materials that the signwriter uses, where it is going to go, and what is the type of surface that it is going to go onto. I only ever use top quality paints and vinyl unless the sign is only to be up for a short time in which case it is not necessary because basically I can do it cheaper and save you money and it will still look the same as the dearer version but it just won't last as long. "How much will it cost?"- ("How long is a piece of string?") A very important question the answer to which depends on a lot of factors. For example:
- How big?
- How much text do you want on it?
- Do you want plain block letters or do you want something fancy?
- Do you want shadows on your signage?
- Do you want artwork or logos and are they simple or complex?
- Where is the sign to go - Is it up high - Is it easy to get to or is it hard?
The answer to all these questions can be determined by the sign writer but it is never as easy as how much does a sign cost. What we do is - We come and see you & get all the information and sizes and location of the sign and then we go back to the office and design a number of examples for your sign with prices for you to look at. Then if you want further layouts we do that until you get what you want. Then once we agree on price we set a time frame. Then if everyone is happy we do it.
